What is a stomach ailment?

Stomach ailments in children are caused by problems in the abdomen.
These ailments often manifest themselves in the form of stomach aches.
Stomach aches can be caused by one of many different reasons.
It is important for you to find out the real reason behind your child’s stomach ache so that it can be treated properly.

What are some common types of stomach ailments?

Some of the common types of stomach ailments are as below:

  • Gastroenteritis or ‘stomach flu’ is a common stomach ailment amongst children and is caused by a virus. This causes diarrhea and vomiting
  • Constipation also leads to stomach aches. This happens when your child has not had proper bowel movements.
  • Food-related ailments are also common. Sometimes, children can get a stomach ache due to over-eating, food allergies or food poisoning.
  • Appendicitis can also be a cause of painful stomach aches. In such a case, your child is likely to feel pain starting from their belly button to the lower right side of their abdomen. If this happens, consult a doctor immediately.Other than these, stomach aches can be caused due to many other reasons such as muscle aches, stress or anxiety.

How can you prevent different stomach ailments?

Although stomach ailments are caused by many different reasons, here are some pointers you can follow to try and prevent your child from getting them.

  • Build up a healthy food habit for your child right from an early age with proper balance of green vegetables, fruits and proteins.
  • Find out if your child has any food allergies and make sure they avoid the same.
  • Teach them not to over eat.
  • Give your children foods that are rich in fiber so that they get regular bowel movements.
  • Make sure they drink lots of fluids.
  • Always stress the importance of washing hands, especially before eating. Show them how to wash their hands thoroughly with warm water and anti-bacterial soap or hand wash such as Bacter Shield to prevent the spread of germs.
  • When outside, make sure the kids drink sealed bottled water, as stomach ailments can be picked up by water-borne germs.
  • When eating raw foods such as salads and fruits, make sure they are fresh and wash them thoroughly before eating.

Home remedies for stomach ailments:

Although you will need to consult your doctor to diagnose and cure your child’s stomach ailment, here are some home remedies that can help your child feel better:

  • Your child needs lots of rest. To relieve gas, you can make them lie face down or in a foetal position.
  • Give them plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. Give them small doses at a time, especially if they are feeling too queasy. Avoid milk, fruit juices and carbonated drinks.
  • Avoid solid foods till their stomach settles. You can then slowly start them off with bland foods like toast, crackers, cooked rice or bananas.
  • Sometimes, even placing a hot water bag on your child’s stomach may provide comfort.
  • Sipping on chamomile tea or ginger tea can also help soothe mild stomach discomfort.
